Let beer be for those who are dying. Let wine be for those who are sad and troubled.

She came to the man of God at the mountain. Then she took hold of his feet. Gehazi came over to push her away. But the man of God said, “Leave her alone! She is suffering terribly. But the Lord hasn’t told me the reason for it. He has hidden it from me.”

Those who were dying gave me their blessing. I made the hearts of widows sing.

“Why should those who suffer ever be born? Why should life be given to those whose spirits are bitter?

There is wine to make people glad. There is olive oil to make their skin glow. And there is bread to make them strong.

Let them drink and forget how poor they are. Let them forget their suffering.

“But what can I say? You have promised to heal me. And you yourself have done it. Once I was proud and bitter. But now I will live the rest of my life free of pride.

Stop drinking only water. If your stomach is upset, drink a little wine. It can also help the other sicknesses you often have.

Hannah was very sad. She wept and wept. She prayed to the Lord.

David was greatly troubled. His men were even talking about killing him by throwing stones at him. All of them were very bitter because their sons and daughters had been taken away. But David was made strong by the Lord his God.
