Wisdom teaches you to have respect for the Lord. So don’t be proud if you want to be honored.

Mordecai had adopted Esther. She had been the daughter of his uncle Abihail. Her turn came to go in to the king. She only asked for what Hegai suggested. He was the king’s official who was in charge of the place where the virgins stayed. Everyone who saw Esther was pleased with her.

He said to human beings, “Have respect for the Lord. That will prove you are wise. Avoid evil. That will show you have understanding.”

If you really want to become wise, you must begin by having respect for the Lord. All those who follow his rules have good understanding. People should praise him forever.

My children, come. Listen to me. I will teach you to have respect for the Lord.

Proverbs teach you wisdom and instruct you. They help you understand wise sayings.

If you really want to gain knowledge, you must begin by having respect for the Lord. But foolish people hate wisdom and instruction.

Those who turn away from correction hate themselves. But anyone who accepts correction gains understanding.

People make plans in their hearts. But the Lord puts the correct answer on their tongues.

If a person’s heart is proud, they will be destroyed. So don’t be proud if you want to be honored.

Pride brings a person low. But those whose spirits are low will be honored.

To have respect for the Lord is to hate evil. I hate pride and bragging. I hate evil ways and twisted words.

All those who lift themselves up will be made humble. And those who make themselves humble will be lifted up.”

Be humble in front of the Lord. And he will lift you up.

In the same way, I’m speaking to you who are younger. Follow the lead of those who are older. All of you, put on a spirit free of pride toward one another. Put it on as if it were your clothes. Do this because Scripture says, “God opposes those who are proud. But he gives grace to those who are humble.” (Proverbs 3:34)
