Listen to what pours out of their mouths. The words from their lips are like swords. They think, “Who can hear us?”

Sin is not ended by using many words. But those who are wise control their tongues.

Those who do right know the proper thing to say. But those who do wrong speak only twisted words.

Wise people act with knowledge. But foolish people show how foolish they are.

The tongues of wise people use knowledge well. But the mouths of foolish people pour out foolish words.

The hearts of wise people guide their mouths. Their words make people want to learn more.

Foolish people let their anger run wild. But wise people keep themselves under control.

Have you seen someone who speaks without thinking? There is more hope for foolish people than for that person.

Don’t be too quick to speak. Don’t be in a hurry to say anything to God. God is in heaven. You are on earth. So use only a few words when you speak.

Don’t let your mouth cause you to sin. Don’t say to the temple messenger, “My promise was a mistake.” Why should God be angry with what you say? Why should he destroy what you have done?

You nest of poisonous snakes! How can you who are evil say anything good? Your mouths say everything that is in your hearts.

But make sure that in your hearts you honor Christ as Lord. Always be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks you about the hope you have. Be ready to give the reason for it. But do it gently and with respect.

They speak empty, bragging words. They make their appeal to the evil desires that come from sin’s power. They tempt new believers who are just escaping from the company of sinful people.
