In their tents they told the Lord how unhappy they were. They didn’t obey him.

But even after all that, they kept on sinning. Even after the wonderful things he had done, they still didn’t believe.

Pharaoh let the people go. The shortest road from Goshen to Canaan went through the Philistine country. But God didn’t lead them that way. God said, “If they have to go into battle, they might change their minds. They might return to Egypt.”

When the people heard these painful words, they began to mourn. No one put on any jewelry.

You came back and wept in front of the Lord. But he didn’t pay any attention to your weeping. He wouldn’t listen to you.

The Lord sent you out from Kadesh Barnea. He said, “Go up and take over the land I have given you.” But you refused to do what the Lord your God had commanded you to do. You didn’t trust him or obey him.

Several other men of Israel went up with me. What they reported terrified the people. But I followed the Lord my God with my whole heart.

So David and his men began to weep out loud. They wept until they couldn’t weep anymore.
