Lord, who is a God like you? You forgive sin. You forgive your people when they do what is wrong. You don’t stay angry forever. Instead, you take delight in showing your faithful love to them.

Do what is right and then you will be accepted. If you don’t do what is right, sin is waiting at your door to grab you. It desires to control you. But you must rule over it.”

He said, “Lord, you are the God of Israel. There is no God like you in heaven above or on earth below. You keep the covenant you made with us. You show us your love. You do that when we follow you with all our hearts.

Suppose you return to the Lord. Then those who captured your relatives and children will be kind to them. In fact, your relatives and children will come back to this land. The Lord your God is kind and tender. He won’t turn away from you if you return to him.”

Hear me when I ask you to help us. Listen to your people Israel when they pray toward this place. Listen to us from heaven. It’s the place where you live. When you hear us, forgive us.

They refused to listen to you. They forgot the miracles you had done among them. So they became stubborn. When they refused to obey you, they appointed a leader for themselves. They wanted to go back to being slaves in Egypt. But you are a God who forgives. You are gracious. You are tender and kind. You are slow to get angry. You are full of love. So you didn’t desert them.

A father is tender and kind to his children. In the same way, the Lord is tender and kind to those who have respect for him.

But you forgive. So we can serve you with respect.

My whole being will cry out, “Who is like you, Lord? You save poor people from those who are too strong for them. You save poor and needy people from those who rob them.”

When our sins became too much for us, you forgave our lawless acts.

Blessed are those you choose and bring near to worship you. You bring us into the courtyards of your holy temple. There in your house we are filled with all kinds of good things.

God, your saving acts reach to the skies. You have done great things. God, who is like you?

But Lord, you are a God who is tender and kind. You are gracious. You are slow to get angry. You are faithful and full of love.

Lord, you are forgiving and good. You are full of love for all who call out to you.

Who in the skies above can compare with the Lord? Who among the angels is like the Lord?

Lord God who rules over all, who is like you? Lord, you are mighty. You are faithful in everything you do.

“Lord, who among the gods is like you? Who is like you? You are majestic and holy. Your glory fills me with wonder. You do amazing things.

“Lord,” he said, “if you are pleased with me, then go with us. Even though these people are stubborn, forgive the evil things we have done. Forgive our sin. And accept us as your people.”

“Come. Let us settle this matter,” says the Lord. “Even though your sins are bright red, they will be as white as snow. Even though they are deep red, they will be white like wool.

No one living in Zion will ever say again, “I’m sick.” And the sins of those who live there will be forgiven.

I’m sure it was for my benefit that I suffered such great pain. You love me. You kept me from going down into the pit of death. You have put all my sins behind your back.

So who will you compare God with? Is there any other god like him?

“So who will you compare me with? Who is equal to me?” says the Holy One.

“I am the one who wipes out your lawless acts. I do it because of who I am. I will not remember your sins anymore.

I will sweep your sins away as if they were a cloud. I will blow them away as if they were the morning mist. Return to me. Then I will set you free.”

Let those who are evil stop doing evil things. And let them quit thinking evil thoughts. Let them turn to the Lord. The Lord will show them his tender love. Let them turn to our God. He is always ready to forgive.

You wore yourself out with all your efforts. But you would not say, ‘It’s hopeless.’ You received new strength. So you did not give up.

I will not find fault with my people forever. I will not always be angry with them. If I were, I would cause their spirits to grow weak. The people I created would faint away.

As a young man marries a young woman, so your Builder will marry you. As a groom is happy with his bride, so your God will be full of joy over you.”

Don’t be so angry with us, Lord. Don’t remember our sins anymore. Please have mercy on us. All of us belong to you.

And I will be full of joy because of Jerusalem. I will take delight in my people. Weeping and crying will not be heard there anymore.

Go. Announce this message to the people in the north. Tell them, “ ‘Israel, you have not been faithful,’ announces the Lord. ‘Return to me. Then I will do good things for you again. That’s because I am faithful,’ announces the Lord. ‘I will not be angry with you forever.

Will you always be angry with me? Will your anger continue forever?’ This is how you talk. But you do all the evil things you can.”

Aren’t the people of Ephraim my dear children? Aren’t they the children I take delight in? I often speak against them. But I still remember them. So my heart longs for them. I love them with a tender love,” announces the Lord.

They will not need to teach their neighbor anymore. And they will not need to teach one another anymore. They will not need to say, ‘Know the Lord.’ That’s because everyone will know me. From the least important of them to the most important, all of them will know me,” announces the Lord. “I will forgive their evil ways. I will not remember their sins anymore.”

I will take pleasure in doing good things for them. I will certainly plant them in this land. I will do these things with all my heart and soul.”

I will wash from its people all the sins they have committed against me. And I will forgive all the sins they committed when they turned away from me.

Ebed-Melek went out of the palace. He said to the king,

The days are coming,” announces the Lord. “At that time people will search for Israel’s guilt. But they will not find any. They will search for Judah’s sins. But they will not find any. That is because I will forgive the people I have spared.

But here is what the one who brags should boast about. They should brag that they have the understanding to know me. I want them to know that I am the Lord. No matter what I do on earth, I am always kind, fair and right. And I take delight in this,” announces the Lord.

When sinful people die, it does not give me any joy,” announces the Lord and King. “But when they turn away from their sins and live, that makes me very happy.

Tell them, ‘When sinful people die, it does not give me any joy. But when they turn away from their sins and live, that makes me very happy. And that is just as sure as I am alive,’ announces the Lord and King. ‘So turn away from your sins! Change your evil ways! Why should you die, people of Israel?’

None of the sins they have committed will be held against them. They have done what is fair and right. So you can be sure they will live.

You are the Lord our God. You show us your tender love. You forgive us. But we have turned against you.

Tell the Lord you are turning away from your sins. Return to him. Say to him, “Forgive us for all our sins. Please be kind to us. Welcome us back to you. Then our lips will offer you our praise.

I will be like the dew to Israel. They will bloom like a lily. They will send their roots down deep like a cedar tree in Lebanon.

Everyone who calls out to me will be saved. On Mount Zion and in Jerusalem some of my people will be left alive. I have chosen them. That is what I have promised.

The Lord says, “The people of Edom have sinned again and again. So I will judge them. They chased Israel with swords that were ready to strike them down. They killed the women of the land. They were angry all the time. Their anger was like a fire that blazed out. It could not be stopped.

The Lord asked me, “What do you see, Amos?” “A plumb line,” I replied. Then the Lord said, “Look at what I am doing. I am hanging a plumb line next to my people Israel. It will show how crooked they are. I will no longer spare them.

“What do you see, Amos?” he asked. “A basket of ripe fruit,” I replied. Then the Lord said to me, “The time is ripe for my people Israel. I will no longer spare them.

He prayed to the Lord. Here is what Jonah said to him. “Lord, isn’t this exactly what I thought would happen when I was still at home? That is what I tried to prevent by running away to Tarshish. I knew that you are gracious. You are tender and kind. You are slow to get angry. You are full of love. You are a God who takes pity on people. You don’t want to destroy them.

“People of Jacob, I will gather all of you. I will bring together you who are still left alive in Israel. I will gather you together like sheep in a pen. You will be like a flock in its grasslands. Your country will be filled with people.

I will make the disabled my faithful people. I will make into a strong nation those driven away from their homes. I will rule over them on Mount Zion. I will be their King from that time on and forever.

The Lord will hand over his people to their enemies. That will last until the pregnant woman bears her promised son. Then the rest of his relatives in Judah will return to their land.

Lord, be like a shepherd to your people. Take good care of them. They are your flock. They live by themselves in the safety of a forest. Rich grasslands are all around them. Let them eat grass in Bashan and Gilead just as they did long ago.

The Lord your God is with you. He is the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you. In his love he will no longer punish you. Instead, he will sing for joy because of you.”

“I don’t see any trouble coming on the people of Jacob. I don’t see any suffering in Israel. The Lord their God is with them. The shout of the King is among them.

But we had to celebrate and be glad. This brother of yours was dead. And now he is alive again. He was lost. And now he is found.’ ”

His followers will preach in his name. They will tell others to turn away from their sins and be forgiven. People from every nation will hear it, beginning at Jerusalem.

How did God answer him? God said, “I have kept 7,000 people for myself. They have not bowed down to Baal.” (1 Kings 19:18)

“There is no one like the God of Israel. He rides across the heavens to help you. He rides on the clouds in his glory.

Those who have not shown mercy will not receive mercy when they are judged. To show mercy is better than to judge.

Then they got rid of the false gods that were among them. They served the Lord. And he couldn’t stand to see Israel suffer anymore.
