Listen to me, you leaders of Jacob’s people! Pay attention, you rulers of Israel! You hate to do what is fair. You twist everything that is right.

I gave a warning to the nobles of Judah. I said, “Why are you doing such an evil thing? You are misusing the Sabbath day!

“Go. Gather the elders of Israel together. Say to them, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, appeared to me. He is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. God said, “I have watched over you. I have seen what the Egyptians have done to you.

The Lord hates two things. He hates it when the guilty are set free. He also hates it when those who aren’t guilty are punished.

Anyone who does wrong accepts favors in secret. Then they turn what is right into what is wrong.

It isn’t good to favor those who do wrong. That would keep justice from those who aren’t guilty.

The harmful things that evil people do will drag them away. They refuse to do what is right.

Your rulers refuse to obey the Lord. They join forces with robbers. All of them love to accept money from those who want special favors. They are always looking for gifts from other people. They don’t stand up in court for children whose fathers have died. They don’t do it for widows either.

They have grown fat and heavy. There is no limit to the evil things they do. In court they do not seek justice. They don’t protect the rights of children whose fathers have died. They do not stand up for poor people.

The priests must teach my people the difference between what is holy and what is not. They must show them how to tell the difference between what is ‘clean’ and what is not.

“Listen to me, you priests! Pay attention, people of Israel! Listen, you members of the royal family! Here is my decision against you. You have been like a trap at Mizpah. You have been like a net spread out on Mount Tabor.

Suppose you say no to my rules and turn away from my laws. And suppose you break my covenant by failing to carry out all my commands.

There are people among you who turn what is fair into something bitter. They throw down to the ground what is right.

A message from the Lord came to Micah. He was from the town of Moresheth. The message came while Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah were kings of Judah. This is the vision Micah saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem. Here is what he said.

Then I said, “Listen, you leaders of Jacob’s people! Pay attention, you rulers of Israel! You should want to judge others fairly.

“May anyone who treats unfairly outsiders, widows, and children whose fathers have died be under the Lord’s curse.” Then all the people will say, “Amen!”
