And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of those who lived before us, we wouldn’t have done what they did. We wouldn’t have helped to kill the prophets.’

The Lord, the God of Israel, sent word to his people through his messengers. He sent it to them again and again. He took pity on his people. He also took pity on the temple where he lived.

“I punished your people. But it did not do them any good. They did not pay attention when they were corrected. You have killed your prophets by swords. You have swallowed them up like a hungry lion.

“How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You pretenders! You build tombs for the prophets. You decorate the graves of the godly.

So you are witnesses against yourselves. You admit that you are the children of those who murdered the prophets.

Think about the people of Israel. Don’t those who eat the offerings share in the altar?

Our hope for you remains firm. We know that you suffer just as we do. In the same way, God comforts you just as he comforts us.
