These are the words Jeremiah received from the Lord. Jeremiah was the son of Hilkiah. Jeremiah was one of the priests at Anathoth. That’s a town in the territory of Benjamin.

“I will send the prophet Elijah to you. He will come before the day of the Lord arrives. It will be a great and terrifying day.

He said to his attendants, “This is John the Baptist. He has risen from the dead! That is why he has the power to do miracles.”

“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

The disciples asked him, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah has to come first?”

In those days John the Baptist came and preached in the Desert of Judea.

Others said, “He is Elijah.” Still others claimed, “He is a prophet. He is like one of the prophets of long ago.”

They replied, “Some say John the Baptist. Others say Elijah. Still others say one of the prophets.”

Others were saying that Elijah had appeared. Still others were saying that a prophet of long ago had come back to life.

They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet we’ve been expecting?” they asked. “No,” he answered.

Many people in the crowd were whispering about him. Some said, “He is a good man.” Others replied, “No. He fools the people.”

Then they turned again to the blind man. “What do you have to say about him?” they asked. “It was your eyes he opened.” The man replied, “He is a prophet.”
