I’m like someone who doesn’t hear. I’m like someone whose mouth can’t make any reply.

He was treated badly and made to suffer. But he didn’t open his mouth. He was led away like a lamb to be killed. Sheep are silent while their wool is being cut off. In the same way, he didn’t open his mouth.

But when the chief priests and the elders brought charges against him, he did not answer.

“Are you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate. “You have said so,” Jesus replied.

So Pilate asked him again, “Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they charge you with.”

But Jesus still did not reply. Pilate was amazed.

From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free. But the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are not Caesar’s friend! Anyone who claims to be a king is against Caesar!”
