“I will send the prophet Elijah to you. He will come before the day of the Lord arrives. It will be a great and terrifying day.

He said to his attendants, “This is John the Baptist. He has risen from the dead! That is why he has the power to do miracles.”

In those days John the Baptist came and preached in the Desert of Judea.

King Herod heard about this. Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead! That is why he has the power to do miracles.”

Others said, “He is Elijah.” Still others claimed, “He is a prophet. He is like one of the prophets of long ago.”

One day Jesus was praying alone. Only his disciples were with him. He asked them, “Who do the crowds say I am?”

“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.”

They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet we’ve been expecting?” they asked. “No,” he answered.

asked him, “If you are not the Messiah, why are you baptizing people? Why are you doing that if you aren’t Elijah or the Prophet we’ve been expecting?”

The people heard his words. Some of them said, “This man must be the Prophet we’ve been expecting.”

Then they turned again to the blind man. “What do you have to say about him?” they asked. “It was your eyes he opened.” The man replied, “He is a prophet.”
