Barabbas had been thrown into prison. He had taken part in a struggle in the city against the authorities. He had also committed murder.

A man named Barabbas was in prison. He was there with some other people who had fought against the country’s rulers. They had committed murder while they were fighting against the rulers.

But the whole crowd shouted, “Kill this man! But let Barabbas go!”

They began to bring charges against Jesus. They said, “We have found this man misleading our people. He is against paying taxes to Caesar. And he claims to be Messiah, a king.”

Pilate wanted to let Jesus go. So he made an appeal to the crowd again.

But they kept it up. They said, “His teaching stirs up the people all over Judea. He started in Galilee and has come all the way here.”

“Aren’t you the Egyptian who turned some of our people against their leaders? Didn’t you lead 4,000 terrorists out into the desert some time ago?”

You spoke against the Holy and Blameless One. You asked for a murderer to be set free instead.
