But Moses asked the Lord his God to have mercy on the people. “Lord,” he said, “why should you destroy your people in anger? You used your great power and mighty hand to bring them out of Egypt.

The Lord spoke to Moses. He said, “Go down. Your people you brought up out of Egypt have become very sinful.

A man who loves wisdom makes his father glad. But a man who spends time with prostitutes wastes his father’s wealth.

They all gave a lot because they are rich. But she gave even though she is poor. She put in everything she had. That was all she had to live on.”

But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve worked like a slave for you. I have always obeyed your orders. You never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends.

“ ‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me. Everything I have is yours.

But we had to celebrate and be glad. This brother of yours was dead. And now he is alive again. He was lost. And now he is found.’ ”

The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed. ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people,’ he said. ‘I am not like robbers or those who do other evil things. I am not like those who commit adultery. I am not even like this tax collector.
