As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him. He fell on his knees before Jesus. “Good teacher,” he said, “what must I do to receive eternal life?”

“What did Moses command you?” he replied.

One of the teachers of the law came and heard the Sadducees arguing. He noticed that Jesus had given the Sadducees a good answer. So he asked him, “Which is the most important of all the commandments?”

I tell you, many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see. But they didn’t see it. They wanted to hear what you hear. But they didn’t hear it.”

“What is written in the Law?” Jesus replied. “How do you understand it?”

A certain ruler asked Jesus a question. “Good teacher,” he said, “what must I do to receive eternal life?”

But the Pharisees and the authorities on the law did not accept for themselves God’s purpose. So they had not been baptized by John.

They were trying to trap Jesus with that question. They wanted to have a reason to bring charges against him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger.

The great gift that God has for us does not depend on the law. If it did, it would no longer depend on the promise. But God gave it to Abraham as a free gift through a promise.
