Set the 50th year apart. Announce freedom all over the land to everyone who lives there. The 50th year will be a Year of Jubilee for you. Each of you must return to your own family property. And each of you must return to your own tribe.

Any of his people among you may go up to Jerusalem and build the Lord’s temple. He is the God of Israel. He is the God who is in Jerusalem. And may their God be with them.

He stands up for those who are treated badly. He gives food to hungry people. The Lord sets prisoners free.

“I am the Lord your God. I brought you out of Egypt. That is the land where you were slaves.

I want you to say to the prisoners, ‘Come out.’ Tell those who are in their dark cells, ‘You are free!’ “On their way home they will eat beside the roads. They will find plenty to eat on every bare hill.

I decided it was time to pay back Israel’s enemies. The year for me to set my people free had come.

So all the officials and people entered into this covenant. They agreed to set their male and female slaves free. They agreed not to hold them as slaves anymore. Instead, they set them free.

A message from the Lord came to Jeremiah. King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people in Jerusalem. He had told them to set their Hebrew slaves free.

But suppose he makes a gift from his share of land to one of his servants. Then the servant may keep it until the Year of Jubilee. After that, it will be returned to the prince. His property may be handed down only to his sons. It belongs to them.

The 50th year will be a Year of Jubilee for you. Do not plant anything. Do not gather what grows without being planted. And do not gather the grapes from the vines you have not taken care of.

“ ‘In the Year of Jubilee all of you must return to your own property.

Then they and their children must be set free. They will go back to their own tribes. They will go back to the property their people have always owned.

“ ‘Suppose they are not bought back in any of those ways. Then they and their children must still be set free in the Year of Jubilee.

He promised to save us from our enemies. Then we could serve him without fear.

Now the Lord is the Holy Spirit. And where the Spirit of the Lord is, freedom is also there.

Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia. She stands for the present city of Jerusalem. That’s because she and her children are slaves.

My brothers and sisters, you were chosen to be free. But don’t use your freedom as an excuse to live under the power of sin. Instead, serve one another in love.

Live as free people. But don’t use your freedom to cover up evil. Live as people who are God’s slaves.
