Joshua 17:14

The people in the family line of Joseph spoke to Joshua. They said, “Why have you given us only one share of the land to have as our own? There are large numbers of us. The Lord has blessed us greatly.”

But his father wouldn’t do it. He said, “I know, my son. I know. He too will become a nation. He too will become great. But his younger brother will be greater than he is. His children after him will become a group of nations.”

On that day, Jacob gave them his blessing. He said, “The people of Israel will bless others in your name. They will say, ‘May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.’ ” So he put Ephraim ahead of Manasseh.

But to you, Joseph, I am giving more land than your brothers. I’m giving you the land I took from the Amorites. I took it with my sword and bow.”

Ephraim will receive one share. It will border the territory of Manasseh from east to west.

There was Igal from the tribe of Issachar. Igal was the son of Joseph.

Give a larger share to a larger family. Give a smaller share to a smaller family. Each family will receive its share based on the number of men listed in it.

They married men in the family line of Manasseh, the son of Joseph. So the land they received remained in their father’s family and tribe.

The tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim were from the family line of Joseph. So they received that land as their share.

“That’s true,” Joshua said. “There are large numbers of you. And the hill country of Ephraim is too small for you. So go up into the forest. Clear out some land for yourselves in the territory of the Perizzites and Rephaites.”
