Jesus looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him. So he said to Philip, “Where can we buy bread for these people to eat?”

Where can I get meat for all these people? They keep crying out to me. They say, ‘Give us meat to eat!’

His disciples answered him. “There is nothing here,” they said. “Where could we get enough bread to feed this large crowd?”

So they went away by themselves in a boat to a quiet place.

The disciples returned. They told Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him. They went off by themselves to a town called Bethsaida.

The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.”

Philip was from the town of Bethsaida. So were Andrew and Peter.

Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one whom Moses wrote about in the Law. The prophets also wrote about him. He is Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

“Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip.

“How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree. I saw you there before Philip called you.”

Don’t you have a saying? You say, ‘It’s still four months until harvest time.’ But I tell you, open your eyes! Look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest right now.
