Then the Lord God formed a man. He made him out of the dust of the ground. God breathed the breath of life into him. And the man became a living person.

The Spirit of God has made me. The breath of the Mighty One gives me life.

The heavens were made when the Lord commanded it to happen. All the stars were created by the breath of his mouth.

Then the Lord said to me, “Prophesy to the breath. Prophesy, son of man. Tell it, ‘The Lord and King says, “Breath, come from all four directions. Go into these people who have been killed. Then they can live.” ’ ”

I will ask the Father. And he will give you another friend to help you and to be with you forever.

“I will send the Friend to you from the Father. He is the Spirit of truth, who comes out from the Father. When the Friend comes to help you, he will be a witness about me.

But what I’m about to tell you is true. It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Friend will not come to help you. But if I go, I will send him to you.

Again Jesus said, “May peace be with you! The Father has sent me. So now I am sending you.”

If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven. If you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

When he said this, he meant the Holy Spirit. Those who believed in Jesus would receive the Spirit later. Up to that time, the Spirit had not been given. This was because Jesus had not yet received glory.

“Surely no one can keep these people from being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.”

He asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?” “No,” they answered. “We haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

Peter replied, “All of you must turn away from your sins and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then your sins will be forgiven. You will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit. They began to speak in languages they had not known before. The Spirit gave them the ability to do this.

Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit. He said to them, “Rulers and elders of the people!

When they arrived there, they prayed for the new believers. They prayed that they would receive the Holy Spirit.

I would like to learn just one thing from you. Did you receive the Holy Spirit by obeying the law? Or did you receive the Spirit by believing what you heard?
