These things happened in order that Scripture would come true. It says, “Not one of his bones will be broken.” (Exodus 12:46; Numbers 9:12; Psalm 34:20)
What happened to Zechariah is what the Lord said would happen. He had spoken that message to Jehu. The Lord had said, “Your sons after you will sit on the throne of Israel. They will rule until the time of your children’s grandchildren.” (2 Kings 10:30)
My strength is like water that is poured out on the ground. I feel as if my bones aren’t connected. My heart has turned to wax. It has melted away inside me.
My whole being will cry out, “Who is like you, Lord? You save poor people from those who are too strong for them. You save poor and needy people from those who rob them.”
They must not leave any of it until morning. They must not break any of its bones. When they celebrate the Passover Feast, they must follow all the rules.
“I am not talking about all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. But this will happen so that this passage of Scripture will come true. It says, ‘The one who shared my bread has turned against me.’ (Psalm 41:9)
“Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s cast lots to see who will get it.” This happened so that Scripture would come true. It says, “They divided up my clothes among them. They cast lots for what I was wearing.” (Psalm 22:18) So that is what the soldiers did.
