Later, Jesus knew that everything had now been finished. He also knew that what Scripture said must come true. So he said, “I am thirsty.”

My mouth is dried up like a piece of broken pottery. My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. You bring me down to the edge of the grave.

They put bitter spices in my food. They gave me vinegar when I was thirsty.

But I have a baptism of suffering to go through. And I must go through it.

Jesus took the 12 disciples to one side. He told them, “We are going up to Jerusalem. Everything that the prophets wrote about the Son of Man will come true.

It is written, ‘He was counted among those who had committed crimes.’ (Isaiah 53:12) I tell you that what is written about me must come true. Yes, it is already coming true.”

They talked about how he would be leaving them soon. This was going to happen in Jerusalem.

It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world. It was time for him to go to the Father. Jesus loved his disciples who were in the world. So he now loved them to the very end.

I have brought you glory on earth. I have finished the work you gave me to do.

Jesus knew everything that was going to happen to him. So he went out and asked them, “Who do you want?”

“Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s cast lots to see who will get it.” This happened so that Scripture would come true. It says, “They divided up my clothes among them. They cast lots for what I was wearing.” (Psalm 22:18) So that is what the soldiers did.

After Jesus drank he said, “It is finished.” Then he bowed his head and died.

These things happened in order that Scripture would come true. It says, “Not one of his bones will be broken.” (Exodus 12:46; Numbers 9:12; Psalm 34:20)

Jesus said, “My food is to do what my Father sent me to do. My food is to finish his work.

They did everything that had been written about Jesus. Then they took him down from the cross. They laid him in a tomb.
