But what I’m about to tell you is true. It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Friend will not come to help you. But if I go, I will send him to you.

When he went up to his place on high, he took many prisoners. He received gifts from people, even from those who refused to obey him. The Lord God went up to live on Mount Zion.

I am going to send you what my Father has promised. But for now, stay in the city. Stay there until you have received power from heaven.”

I tell you for sure that there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah. And there had been no rain for three and a half years. There wasn’t enough food to eat anywhere in the land.

“What I’m about to tell you is true. Some who are standing here will not die before they see God’s kingdom.”

But the Father will send the Friend in my name to help you. The Friend is the Holy Spirit. He will teach you all things. He will remind you of everything I have said to you.

“You heard me say, ‘I am going away. And I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad I am going to the Father. The Father is greater than I am.

If I go and do that, I will come back. And I will take you to be with me. Then you will also be where I am.

“I will send the Friend to you from the Father. He is the Spirit of truth, who comes out from the Father. When the Friend comes to help you, he will be a witness about me.

When he comes, he will prove that the world’s people are guilty. He will prove their guilt concerning sin and godliness and judgment.

When he said this, he meant the Holy Spirit. Those who believed in Jesus would receive the Spirit later. Up to that time, the Spirit had not been given. This was because Jesus had not yet received glory.

Then Peter began to speak. “I now realize how true it is that God treats everyone the same,” he said.

Jesus has been given a place of honor at the right hand of God. He has received the Holy Spirit from the Father. This is what God had promised. It is Jesus who has poured out what you now see and hear.

We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him. He appointed them to be saved in keeping with his purpose.

Our troubles are small. They last only for a short time. But they are earning for us a glory that will last forever. It is greater than all our troubles.
