He didn’t say this because he cared about the poor. He said it because he was a thief. Judas was in charge of the money bag. He used to help himself to what was in it.

Foolish people say in their hearts, “There is no God.” They do all kinds of horrible and evil things. No one does anything good.

Those who do what is right want to treat poor people fairly. But those who do what is wrong don’t care about the poor.

My people come to you, just as they usually do. They sit in front of you. They hear what you say. But they do not put it into practice. With their mouths they say they love me. But in their hearts they want what belongs to others. They try to get rich by cheating them.

He said to them, “It is written that the Lord said, ‘My house will be called a house where people can pray.’ (Isaiah 56:7) But you are making it ‘a den for robbers.’ ” (Jeremiah 7:11)

Another was Joanna, the wife of Chuza. He was the manager of Herod’s household. Susanna and many others were there also. These women were helping to support Jesus and the 12 disciples with their own money.

The man runs away because he is a hired man. He does not care about the sheep.

“Why wasn’t this perfume sold? Why wasn’t the money given to poor people? It was worth a year’s pay.”

Judas was in charge of the money. So some of the disciples thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the feast. Others thought Jesus was talking about giving something to poor people.

Neither will thieves or those who always want more and more. Neither will those who are often drunk or tell lies or cheat. People who live like that will not receive God’s kingdom.

They asked only one thing. They wanted us to continue to remember poor people. That was what I had wanted to do all along.

Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes. And suppose a poor man in dirty old clothes also comes in.

But you have disrespected poor people. Aren’t rich people taking advantage of you? Aren’t they dragging you into court?
