The Lord who rules over all says, “I will send my messenger. He will prepare my way for me. Then suddenly the Lord you are looking for will come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant will come. He is the one you long for.”

He is the one written about in Scripture. It says, “ ‘I will send my messenger ahead of you. He will prepare your way for you.’ (Malachi 3:1)

Where did John’s baptism come from? Was it from heaven? Or did it come from human authority?” They talked to one another about it. They said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’

But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah. Your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will have a child. It will be a boy, and you must call him John.

“And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High God. You will go ahead of the Lord to prepare the way for him.

I myself did not know him. But the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘You will see the Spirit come down and remain on someone. He is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’

You yourselves are witnesses that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah. I was sent ahead of him.’

Before Jesus came, John preached that we should turn away from our sins and be baptized. He preached this to all Israel.
