Joel 1:11

New International Reader's Version

Farmers, be sad. Cry, you who grow vines. Mourn because the wheat and barley are gone. The crops in the fields are destroyed.

The plants might start to grow on the day you set them out. The vines might begin to bud on the morning you plant them. But even if they do, there won’t be any harvest. Instead, there will be sickness and pain that won’t go away.

“Judah is filled with sadness. Its cities are wasting away. The people weep for the land. Crying is heard in Jerusalem.

Do not leave anyone in Babylon to plant the fields. Do not leave anyone to harvest the grain. Let each of them return to their own people. Let them run away to their own land. If they don’t, their enemy’s sword will bring them great harm.

Who is wise enough to understand these things? Who has been taught by the Lord? Who can explain them? Why has the land been destroyed so completely? Why has it become like a desert that no one can go across?

“Son of man, prophesy. Say, ‘The Lord and King says, “ ‘ “Cry out, ‘A terrible day is coming!’

The Lord God rules over all. The Lord says, “People will weep in all the streets. They will be very sad in every market place. Even farmers will be told to cry loudly. People will mourn for the dead.

And hope will never bring us shame. That’s because God’s love has been poured into our hearts. This happened through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
