My body is covered with worms and sores. My skin is broken. It has boils all over it.

“People waste away like something that is rotten. They are like clothes that are eaten by moths.

Suppose I say to the grave, ‘You are like a father to me.’ And suppose I say to its worms, ‘You are like a mother or sister to me.’

My eyes have grown weak because I’m so sad. My body is so thin it hardly casts a shadow.

I’m nothing but skin and bones. I’ve barely escaped death.

Though my skin will be destroyed, in my body I’ll see God.

Even their mothers forget them. The worms in their graves eat them up. No one remembers sinful people anymore. They are cut down like trees.

Even then you would throw me into a muddy pit. And even my clothes would hate me.

There isn’t a healthy spot on your body. You are not healthy from the bottom of your feet to the top of your head. You have nothing but wounds, cuts and open sores. They haven’t been cleaned up or bandaged or treated with olive oil.

Your grand show of power has been brought down to the grave. The noise of your harps has come down here along with your power. Maggots are spread out under you. Worms cover you.

“When they go out of Jerusalem, they will see the dead bodies of those who refused to obey me. The worms that eat their bodies will not die. The fire that burns them will not be put out. It will make everyone sick just to look at them.”

There you will remember your conduct. You will think about everything you did that made you “unclean.” And you will hate yourselves because of all the evil things you have done.

Right away an angel of the Lord struck Herod down. Herod had not given praise to God. So he was eaten by worms and died.
