Why don’t you forgive the wrong things I’ve done? Why don’t you forgive me for my sins? I’ll soon lie down in the dust of my grave. You will search for me. But I’ll be gone.”

David felt sorry that he had counted the fighting men. So he said to the Lord, “I committed a great sin when I counted Judah and Israel’s men. Lord, I beg you to take away my guilt. I’ve done a very foolish thing.”

If I sinned, you would be watching me. You wouldn’t let me go without punishing me.

Remember, you molded me like clay. So are you going to turn me back into dust?

Can others bring charges against me? If they can, I’ll keep quiet and die.

No man is like that. When he dies, he is buried in a grave. He takes his last breath. Then he is gone.

Suppose I say to the grave, ‘You are like a father to me.’ And suppose I say to its worms, ‘You are like a mother or sister to me.’

Like a dream they will fly away. They will never be seen again. They will be driven away like visions in the night.

Sinful people lie down wealthy, but their wealth is taken away. When they open their eyes, everything is gone.

If all of that hadn’t happened, I would be lying down in peace. I’d be asleep and at rest in the grave.

You said, ‘I’m pure. I have done no wrong. I’m clean. I’m free from sin.

The eyes that see me now won’t see me anymore. You will look for me. But I’ll be gone.

Then Bildad the Shuhite replied,

Then I’d still be afraid I’d go on suffering. That’s because I know you would say I had done something wrong.

The life of human beings is like grass. People grow like the flowers in the field.

But he soon passed away and was gone. Even though I looked for him, I couldn’t find him.

Remember your Creator before you return to the dust you came from. Remember him before your spirit goes back to God who gave it.

Lord, your people who have died will live again. Their bodies will rise from the dead. Let those who lie in the grave wake up and shout for joy. You give life, Lord, like the dew of the morning. So the earth will give up its dead people.

Don’t be so angry with us, Lord. Don’t remember our sins anymore. Please have mercy on us. All of us belong to you.

Many people who lie dead in their graves will wake up. Some will rise up to life that will never end. Others will rise up to shame that will never end.

Tell the Lord you are turning away from your sins. Return to him. Say to him, “Forgive us for all our sins. Please be kind to us. Welcome us back to you. Then our lips will offer you our praise.

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him. John said, “Look! The Lamb of God! He takes away the sin of the world!

He gave himself for us. By doing that, he set us free from all evil. He wanted to make us pure. He wanted us to be his very own people. He wanted us to desire to do what is good.

But God is faithful and fair. If we confess our sins, he will forgive our sins. He will forgive every wrong thing we have done. He will make us pure.

But you know that Christ came to take our sins away. And there is no sin in him.
