Old people are wise. Those who live a long time have understanding.

People who are old and gray are on our side. And they are even older than your parents!

“Are you the first man who was ever born? Were you created before the hills?

But Elihu the Buzite was very angry with Job. That’s because Job said he himself was right instead of God. Elihu was the son of Barakel. He was from the family of Ram.

But he saw that the three men didn’t have anything more to say. So he was very angry.

“ ‘Stand up in order to show your respect for old people. Also have respect for me. I am the Lord your God.

Give to everyone what you owe them. Do you owe taxes? Then pay them. Do you owe anything else to the government? Then pay it. Do you owe respect? Then give it. Do you owe honor? Then show it.

Correct an older man in a way that shows respect. Make an appeal to him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as if they were your brothers.

In the same way, help the young men to control themselves.

In the same way, I’m speaking to you who are younger. Follow the lead of those who are older. All of you, put on a spirit free of pride toward one another. Put it on as if it were your clothes. Do this because Scripture says, “God opposes those who are proud. But he gives grace to those who are humble.” (Proverbs 3:34)
