My face is red from crying. I have dark circles under my eyes.

Midnight is like morning to them. The terrors of darkness are their friends.

Human beings light up the darkness. They search for ore in the deepest pits. They look for it in the blackest darkness.

May that day turn into darkness. May God in heaven not care about it. May no light shine on it.

May deep darkness take over the night I was born. May it not be included among the days of the year. May it never appear in any of the months.

There is no deep shadow or total darkness where those who do what is evil can hide.

Have the gates of death been shown to you? Have you seen the gates of the deepest darkness?

Others lived in the deepest darkness. They suffered as prisoners in iron chains.

He brought them out of the deepest darkness. He broke their chains off.

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid. You are with me. Your shepherd’s rod and staff comfort me.

But you crushed us and left us to the wild dogs. You covered us over with deep darkness.

The people who are now living in darkness will see a great light. They are now living in a very dark land. But a light will shine on them.

Give glory to the Lord your God. Honor him before he sends darkness to cover the land. Do this before you trip and fall on the darkened hills. You hope that light will come. But he will turn it into thick darkness. He will change it to deep shadows.

They did not ask, ‘Where is the Lord? He brought us up out of Egypt. He led us through a dry and empty land. He guided us through deserts and deep valleys. It was a land of total darkness where there wasn’t any rain. No one lived or traveled there.’

So the earth will be filled with sadness. The sky above will grow dark. I have spoken, and I will not take pity on them. I have made my decision, and I will not change my mind.”

The day is near. The day of the Lord is coming. It will be a cloudy day. The nations have been sentenced to die.

A shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them. And I will look after my sheep. I will save them from all the places where they were scattered on a dark and cloudy day.

That day will be dark and sad. It will be black and cloudy. A huge army of locusts is coming. They will spread across the mountains like the sun when it rises. There has never been an army like it. And there will never be another for all time to come.

The Lord made the Pleiades and Orion. He turns midnight into sunrise. He makes the day fade into night. He sends for the waters in the clouds. Then he pours them out on the surface of the land. His name is the Lord.

I will turn your holy feasts into times for mourning. I will turn all your songs into weeping. You will have to wear the clothing of sadness. You will shave your heads. I will make you mourn as if your only son had died. The end of that time will be like a bitter day.”

The people who are now living in darkness have seen a great light. They are now living in a very dark land. But a light has shined on them.” (Isaiah 9:1,2)

It will shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death. It will guide our feet on the path of peace.”

You came near and stood at the foot of the mountain. It blazed with fire that reached as high as the very heavens. There were black clouds and deep darkness.

You haven’t come to a mountain that can be touched. You haven’t come to a mountain burning with fire. You haven’t come to darkness, gloom and storm.
