“Human beings have only a few days to live. Their lives are full of trouble.

The Lord God said to Adam, “You listened to your wife’s suggestion. You ate fruit from the tree I warned you about. I said, ‘You must not eat its fruit.’ “So I am putting a curse on the ground because of what you did. All the days of your life you will have to work hard. It will be painful for you to get food from the ground.

Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The years of my journey through life are 130. My years have been few and hard. They aren’t as many as the years of my father and grandfather before me.”

The boy said to his father, “My head hurts! It really hurts!” His father told a servant, “Carry him to his mother.”

Aren’t my few days almost over? Leave me so I can have a moment of joy.

“Can human beings really be pure? Can those who are born really be right with God?

How can human beings be right with God? How can mere people really be pure?

Even the moon isn’t bright and the stars aren’t pure in God’s eyes.

People are born to have trouble. And that’s just as sure as sparks fly up.

Job continued, “Don’t all human beings have to work hard on this earth? Aren’t their days like the days of hired workers?

“My days pass by faster than a weaver can work. They come to an end. I don’t have any hope.

After all, we were born only yesterday. So we don’t know anything. Our days on this earth are like a shadow that disappears.

“God, my days race by like a runner. They fly away without seeing any joy.

You have given me only a few days to live. My whole life doesn’t seem like anything to you. No one lasts any longer than a breath. This is true even for those who feel secure.

People are only shadows as they go here and there. They rush around, but it doesn’t mean anything. They pile up wealth, but they don’t know who will finally get it.

I know I’ve been a sinner ever since I was born. I’ve been a sinner ever since my mother became pregnant with me.

Remember how short my life is. You have created all people for such a useless purpose!

So I hated life. That’s because the work done on this earth made me sad. None of it has any meaning. It’s like chasing the wind.

As long as they live, their work is nothing but pain and sorrow. Even at night their minds can’t rest. That doesn’t have any meaning either.

Why did I ever come out of my mother’s body? I’ve seen nothing but trouble and sorrow. My days will end in shame.

What I’m about to tell you is true. No one more important than John the Baptist has ever been born. But the least important person in the kingdom of heaven is more important than he is.
