The boys grew up. Esau became a skillful hunter. He liked the open country. But Jacob was content to stay at home among the tents.

Jacob and Esau owned so much that they couldn’t remain together. There wasn’t enough land for both of them. They had too much livestock.

Jehu left there. On the way he met Jehonadab. He was the son of Rekab. Jehonadab was on his way to see Jehu. Jehu greeted him. He asked, “Are you my friend? You know I’m your friend.” “I am,” Jehonadab answered. “If that’s true,” said Jehu, “hold out your hand.” So he did. Then Jehu helped him up into the chariot.

Then Jehu went into Baal’s temple. Jehonadab, the son of Rekab, went with him. Jehu said to those who served Baal, “Look around. Make sure that no one who serves the Lord is here with you. Make sure only those who serve Baal are here.”

At first there weren’t very many of God’s people. There were only a few. And they were strangers in the land.

It also included the family groups of secretaries who lived at Jabez. They were the Tirathites, Shimeathites and Sucathites. They were the Kenites who belonged to the family line of Hammath. Hammath was the father of the family line of Rekab.

“Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long time in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

We’ve always lived in tents. We’ve completely obeyed everything Jehonadab commanded our people of long ago.

“Jehonadab, the son of Rekab, ordered his children not to drink wine. And they have kept his command. To this day they do not drink wine. They obey the command Jehonadab gave their people long ago. But I have spoken to you again and again. In spite of that, you have not obeyed me.

“You and your sons will go into the tent of meeting. When you do, you must not drink any kind of wine. If you do, you will die. This is a law that will last for all time to come.

He will be important in the sight of the Lord. He must never drink wine or other such drinks. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born.

Dear friends, you are outsiders and those who wander in this world. So I’m asking you not to give in to your sinful desires. They fight against your soul.

She must not eat anything that comes from grapevines. She must not drink any kind of wine. She must not eat anything that is ‘unclean.’ She must do everything I have commanded her to do.”
