Then the Lord asked me, “What do you see, Jeremiah?” “Figs,” I answered. “The good ones are very good. But the others are so bad they can’t be eaten.”

Then a message from the Lord came to me. The Lord said,

The Lord who rules over all says, “I will send war, hunger and plague against them. I will make them like bad figs. They are so bad they can’t be eaten.

The Lord asked me, “What do you see, Amos?” “A plumb line,” I replied. Then the Lord said, “Look at what I am doing. I am hanging a plumb line next to my people Israel. It will show how crooked they are. I will no longer spare them.

“What do you see, Amos?” he asked. “A basket of ripe fruit,” I replied. Then the Lord said to me, “The time is ripe for my people Israel. I will no longer spare them.

“What do you see?” he asked me. “I see a solid gold lampstand,” I answered. “It has a bowl on top of it. There are seven lamps on it. Seven tubes lead to the lamps.

“What do you see?” the angel asked me. “A scroll flying in the air,” I replied. “It’s 30 feet long and 15 feet wide.”

In Israel, prophets used to be called seers. So if someone wanted to ask God for advice, they would say, “Come on. Let’s go to the seer.”
