“Jehoiakim, does having more and more cedar boards make you a king? Your father Josiah had enough to eat and drink. He did what was right and fair. So everything went well with him.

David ruled over the whole nation of Israel. He did what was fair and right for all his people.

May the Lord your God be praised. He takes great delight in you. He placed you on the throne of Israel. The Lord will love Israel for all time to come. That’s why he has made you king. He knows that you will do what is fair and right.”

Josiah did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. He lived the way King David had lived. He didn’t turn away from it to the right or the left.

There was no king like Josiah either before him or after him. None of them turned to the Lord as he did. He obeyed the Lord with all his heart and all his soul. He obeyed him with all his strength. He did everything the Law of Moses required.

Josiah’s first son was Johanan. Jehoiakim was his second son. Zedekiah was the third son. Shallum was the fourth son.

He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. He lived the way King David had lived. He didn’t turn away from it to the right or the left.

But Josiah wouldn’t turn away from Necho. Josiah wore different clothes so people wouldn’t recognize him. He wanted to go to war against Necho. He wouldn’t listen to what God had commanded Necho to say. Instead, Josiah went out to fight him on the plains of Megiddo.

Josiah did many things that showed he was faithful to the Lord. Those things and the other events of Josiah’s rule were in keeping with what is written in the Law of the Lord.

Love and truth keep a king safe. Faithful love makes his throne secure.

Do what is right and fair. The Lord accepts that more than sacrifices.

Remove ungodly officials from where the king is. Then the king can make his throne secure because of the godliness around him.

By doing what is fair, a king makes a country secure. But those who only want money tear it down.

Speak up and judge fairly. Speak up for the rights of those who are poor and needy.

How blessed is the land whose king was born into the royal family! How blessed if its princes eat and drink at the proper time! How blessed if they eat and drink to become strong and not to get drunk!

A person can’t do anything better than eat, drink and be satisfied with their work. I’m finally seeing that those things also come from the hand of God.

Tell those who do what is right that things will go well with them. They will enjoy the results of the good things they’ve done.

People like that will be kept safe. It will be as if they were living on high mountains. It will be as if they were living in a mountain fort. They will have all the food they need. And they will never run out of water.”

There will be no limit to how great his authority is. The peace he brings will never end. He will rule on David’s throne and over his kingdom. He will make the kingdom strong and secure. His rule will be based on what is fair and right. It will last forever. The Lord’s great love will make sure that happens. He rules over all.

Here is what the Lord says to you who belong to David’s royal house. “ ‘ “Every morning do what is right and fair. Save those who have been robbed. Set them free from the people who have treated them badly. If you do not, my anger will blaze out against you. It will burn like fire because of the evil things you have done. No one will be able to put it out.

So the Lord speaks about King Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah. He says, “His people will not mourn for him. They will not say, ‘My poor brother! My poor sister!’ They will not mourn for him. They will not say, ‘My poor master! How sad that his glory is gone!’

The Lord says, “Do what is fair and right. Save those who have been robbed. Set them free from the people who have treated them badly. Do not do anything wrong to outsiders or widows in this place. Do not harm children whose fathers have died. Do not kill those who are not guilty of doing anything wrong.

“A new day is coming,” announces the Lord. “At that time I will raise up for David’s royal line a godly Branch. He will be a King who will rule wisely. He will do what is fair and right in the land.

It doesn’t matter whether what you say is in our favor or not. We’re asking you to pray to the Lord our God. And we’ll obey him. Things will go well with us. That’s because we will obey the Lord our God.”

You must really change the way you live and act. Treat one another fairly.

Give freely to poor people to show what is inside you. Then everything will be clean for you.

Every day they met together in the temple courtyard. They ate meals together in their homes. Their hearts were glad and sincere.

So eat and drink and do everything else for the glory of God.

I’m giving you his rules and commands today. Obey them. Then things will go well with you and your children after you. You will live a long time in the land. The Lord your God is giving you the land for all time to come.
