Isaiah 48:1

New International Reader's Version

People of Jacob, listen to me. You are called by the name of Israel. You come from the family line of Judah. You make promises in the name of the Lord. You pray to Israel’s God. But you aren’t honest. You don’t mean what you say.

Then the man said, “Your name will not be Jacob anymore. Instead, it will be Israel. You have wrestled with God and with people. And you have won.”

God said to him, “Your name is Jacob. But you will not be called Jacob anymore. Your name will be Israel.” So he named him Israel.

The people of Samaria are still stubborn. They continue in their old practices to this day. And now they don’t even worship the Lord. They don’t follow his directions and rules. They don’t obey his laws and commands. The Lord had given all these laws to the family of Jacob. He gave the name Israel to Jacob.

Gehazi was the servant of Elisha, the man of God. Gehazi said to himself, “My master was too easy on Naaman from Aram. He should have accepted the gift Naaman brought. I’m going to run after him. I’m going to get something from him. And that’s just as sure as the Lord is alive.”

But the king will be filled with joy because of what God has done. All those who make promises in God’s name will be able to brag. But the mouths of liars will be shut.

Say to God, “What wonderful things you do! Your power is so great that your enemies bow down to you in fear.

The leaders sing, “Praise God among all those who worship him. Praise the Lord in the community of Israel.”

The little tribe of Benjamin leads the worshipers. Next comes the great crowd of Judah’s princes. Then come the princes of Zebulun and the princes of Naphtali.

“Be careful to do everything I have said to you. Do not speak the names of other gods. Do not even let them be heard on your lips.

Should your springs pour out into the streets? Should your streams of water pour out in public places?

Lord, you are our God. Other masters besides you have ruled over us. But your name is the only one we honor.

Some will say, ‘We belong to the Lord.’ Others will call themselves by Jacob’s name. Still others will write on their hands, ‘We belong to the Lord.’ And they will be called by the name of Israel.

I have made a promise in my own name. I have spoken with complete honesty. I will not take back a single word. I said, ‘Everyone will kneel down to me. Everyone’s mouth will make promises in my name.’

Listen to me, you stubborn people. Pay attention, you who now refuse to do what I have said is right.

The Lord says, “Listen to me, you who want to do what is right. Pay attention, you who look to me. Consider the rock you were cut out of. Think about the rock pit you were dug from.

Consider Abraham. He is the father of your people. Think about Sarah. She is your mother. When I chose Abraham, he did not have any children. But I blessed him and gave him many of them.

Day after day they worship me. They seem ready and willing to know how I want them to live. They act as if they were a nation that does what is right. They act as if they have not turned away from my commands. They claim to want me to give them fair decisions. They seem ready and willing to come near and worship me.

The Lord has made a promise. He has lifted up his right hand and mighty arm. He has promised, “I will never give your grain to your enemies for food again. Outsiders will never again drink the fresh wine you have worked so hard for.

All of us have become like someone who is “unclean.” All the good things we do are like dirty rags to you. All of us are like leaves that have dried up. Our sins sweep us away like the wind.

They will ask me to bless their land. They will do it in my name. I am the one true God. They will make promises in their land. They will do it in my name. I am the one true God. The troubles of the past will be forgotten. They will be hidden from my eyes.

Make all your promises in my name. When you promise say, ‘You can be sure that the Lord is alive.’ Be truthful, fair and honest when you make these promises. Then the nations will ask for blessings from me. And they will boast about me.”

But listen to the Lord’s message. Listen, all you Jews living in Egypt. ‘I make a promise by my own great name,’ says the Lord. ‘Here is what I promise. “No one from Judah who lives anywhere in Egypt will ever again pray in my name. None of them will ever make this promise. They will never say, ‘You can be sure that the Lord and King is alive.’ ”

They make their promises in my name. They say, ‘You can be sure that the Lord is alive.’ But their promises can’t be trusted.”

“ ‘Do not give your word in my name and then be a false witness. That would be treating the name of your God as if it were not holy. I am the Lord.

People of Jacob, should anyone say, “The Lord is patient, so he wouldn’t do things like that”? The Lord replies, “What I promise brings good things to those who lead honest lives.

I will destroy those who bow down on their roofs to worship all the stars. I will destroy those who make promises not only in my name but also in the name of Molek.

He said to me, “A curse sent by the Lord is written on it. It is going out over the whole land. Every thief will be driven out of the land. That is what it says on one side of the scroll. Everyone who lies when promising to tell the truth will also be driven out. That is what it says on the other side.

“So I will come and put you on trial. I will be quick to bring charges against all of you,” says the Lord who rules over all. “I will bring charges against you sinful people who do not have any respect for me. That includes those who practice evil magic. It includes those who commit adultery and those who tell lies in court. It includes those who cheat workers out of their pay. It includes those who treat widows badly. It also includes those who mistreat children whose fathers have died. And it includes those who take away the rights of outsiders in the courts.

Their water buckets will run over. Their seeds will have plenty of water. “Their king will be greater than King Agag. Their kingdom will be honored.

“How terrible it will be for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You pretenders! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter. And you will not let those enter who are trying to.

Jesus saw Nathanael approaching. Here is what Jesus said about him. “He is a true Israelite. Nothing about him is false.”

God is spirit. His worshipers must worship him in the Spirit and in truth.”

Suppose you call yourself a Jew. You trust in the law. You brag that you know God.

I do not mean that God’s word has failed. Not everyone in the family line of Israel really belongs to Israel.

In other words, God’s children are not just in the family line of Abraham. Instead, they are the children God promised to him. They are the ones considered to be Abraham’s children.

Honor the Lord your God. Serve him. Remain true to him. When you make promises, do so in his name.

So Israel will live in safety. Jacob will live secure in a land that has grain and fresh wine. There the heavens drop their dew.

The Lord heard you when you spoke to me. He said to me, “I have heard what these people said to you. Everything they said was good.

Worship the Lord your God. He is the only one you should serve. When you make promises, do so in his name.

Teachings like those come from liars who pretend to be what they are not. Their sense of what is right and wrong has been destroyed. It’s as though it has been burned with a hot iron.

‘I know that you suffer and are poor. But you are rich! Some people say they are Jews but are not. I know that their words are evil. Their worship comes from Satan.

Some people claim they are Jews but are not. They are liars. Their worship comes from Satan. I will make them come and fall down at your feet. I will make them say in public that I have loved you.
