But now he says, “In exactly three years, people will look down on Moab’s glory. Now Moab has many people. But by that time only a few of them will be left alive. And even they will be weak.”

Jacob heard what Laban’s sons were saying. “Jacob has taken everything our father owned,” they said. “He has gained all this wealth from what belonged to our father.”

He bragged to them about how rich he was. He talked about how many sons he had. He spoke about all the ways the king had honored him. He bragged about how the king had given him a high position. It was higher than the position of any of the other nobles and officials.

So look away from him. Leave him alone. Let him put in his time like a hired worker.

Job continued, “Don’t all human beings have to work hard on this earth? Aren’t their days like the days of hired workers?

Together they will rush down the slopes of Philistia to the west. They’ll take what belongs to the people of the east. They’ll take over Edom and Moab. The people of Ammon will be under their control.

My heart cries out over Moab. Some who run away get as far as Zoar. Others run all the way to Eglath Shelishiyah. Others go up the hill to Luhith. They are weeping as they go. Still others travel the road to Horonaim. They sing a song of sadness because their town is being destroyed.

That’s the message the Lord has already spoken against Moab.

“In days to come, the glory of Jacob’s people will fade. Their strength will get weaker and weaker.

The Lord spoke to me. He said, “In exactly one year, Kedar’s splendor will come to an end.

The Lord who rules over all planned to do it. He wanted to bring down all its pride and glory. He wanted to shame those who were honored all over the earth.

The Lord’s power will keep Mount Zion safe. But the people of Moab will be crushed in their land. They will be crushed just as straw is crushed in animal waste.

They will try to swim their way out of it. They will spread out their hands in it, just as swimmers spread out their hands to swim. But God will bring down Moab’s pride. None of their skill will help them.

Even before then, the lands of the two kings you fear will be ruined.

Moab will be destroyed as a nation. That is because its people thought they were better than the Lord.

The Lord says, “Do not let wise people brag about how wise they are. Do not let strong people boast about how strong they are. Do not let rich people brag about how rich they are.

Instead, open your hands and lend them what they need. Do it freely.
