Then Joseph lifted his sons off Israel’s knees. Joseph bowed down with his face to the ground.

So Jacob’s sons did exactly as he had commanded them.

So Bathsheba went to King Solomon. She went to him to speak for Adonijah. The king stood up to greet her. He bowed down to her. Then he sat down on his throne. He had a throne brought for his mother. She sat down at his right side.

Elisha saw it and cried out to Elijah, “My father! You are like a father to me! You, Elijah, are the true chariots and horsemen of Israel!” Elisha didn’t see Elijah anymore. Then Elisha took hold of his own garment and tore it in two.

“Anyone who attacks their father or mother must be put to death.

“Anyone who asks for something bad to happen to their father or mother must be put to death.

A foolish person turns their back on their parent’s correction. But anyone who accepts correction shows understanding.

Grandchildren are like a crown to older people. And children are proud of their parents.

If anyone asks for bad things to happen to their father or mother, that person’s lamp will be blown out in total darkness.

Anyone who steals from their parents and says, “It’s not wrong,” is just like someone who destroys.

Long life is in her right hand. In her left hand are riches and honor.

“Some people curse their fathers. Others don’t bless their mothers.

“One person makes fun of their father. Another doesn’t honor their mother when she is old. The ravens of the valley will peck out their eyes. Then the vultures will eat them.

Then Jeremiah spoke to the members of the family line of Rekab. Jeremiah said, “The Lord who rules over all is the God of Israel. He says, ‘You have obeyed the command Jehonadab gave your people of long ago. You have followed all his directions. You have done everything he ordered.’

Also you must never build houses. You must never plant crops or vineyards. You must never have any of these things. Instead, you must always live in tents. Then you will live a long time in the land where you are wandering around.’

They have made fun of fathers and mothers alike. They have crushed outsiders. They have treated badly the children whose fathers have died. They have done the same thing to widows.

“ ‘All of you must have respect for your mother and father. You must always keep my Sabbath days. I am the Lord your God.

“ ‘Stand up in order to show your respect for old people. Also have respect for me. I am the Lord your God.

“A son honors his father. A slave honors his master. If I am a father, where is the honor I should have? If I am a master, where is the respect you should give me?” says the Lord who rules over all. “You priests look down on me. “But you ask, ‘How have we looked down on you?’

Honor your father and mother.’ (Exodus 20:12–16; Deuteronomy 5:16–20) And ‘love your neighbor as you love yourself.’ ” (Leviticus 19:18)

You know what the commandments say. ‘Do not murder. Do not commit adultery. Do not steal. Do not be a false witness. Do not cheat. Honor your father and mother.’ ” (Exodus 20:12–16; Deuteronomy 5:16–20)

Follow the lead of one another because of your respect for Christ.

So obey all the commands I’m giving you today. Then you will be strong enough to go in and take over the land. You will go across the Jordan River and take the land as your own.

You will live there for a long time. It’s the land the Lord promised to give to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and their children after them. He gave his word when he made that promise. The land has plenty of milk and honey.

Suppose someone has a very stubborn son. He doesn’t obey his father and mother. And he won’t listen to them when they try to correct him.

You must use weights and measures that are honest and exact. Then you will live a long time in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

“May anyone who brings shame on their father or mother be under the Lord’s curse.” Then all the people will say, “Amen!”

They aren’t just useless words for you. They are your very life. If you obey them, you will live in the land for a long time. It’s the land you are going across the Jordan River to take as your own.”

Today I’m calling out to the heavens and the earth to be witnesses against you. Suppose you do these things. Then you will quickly die in the land you are going across the Jordan River to take over. You won’t live there very long. You will certainly be destroyed.

I’m giving you his rules and commands today. Obey them. Then things will go well with you and your children after you. You will live a long time in the land. The Lord your God is giving you the land for all time to come.

“Honor your father and mother, just as the Lord your God has commanded you. Then you will live a long time in the land he is giving you. And things will go well with you there.

Live exactly as the Lord your God has commanded you to live. Then you will enjoy life in the land you will soon own. Things will go well with you there. You will live there for a long time.

Then you, your children and their children after them will honor the Lord your God as long as you live. Obey all his rules and commands I’m giving you. If you do, you will enjoy long life.

Children, obey your parents in everything. That pleases the Lord.

So she went down to the threshing floor. She did everything her mother-in-law had told her to do.

From there David went to Mizpah in Moab. He spoke to the king of Moab. He said, “Please let my father and mother come and stay with you. Let them stay until I learn what God will do for me.”
