Shekaniah spoke to Ezra. Shekaniah was the son of Jehiel. He belonged to the family line of Elam. Shekaniah said, “We haven’t been faithful to our God. We’ve married women from the nations around us. In spite of that, there is still hope for Israel.

So Ezra got up. He made the leading priests and Levites and all the Israelites make a promise. He made them promise they would do what Shekaniah had suggested. And they made that promise.

He guided them safely, and they weren’t afraid. But the Red Sea swallowed up their enemies.

Listen to me. I’ll give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must speak to God for the people. Take their problems to him.

If this is what God wants and if you do it, then you will be able to carry the load. And all these people will go home satisfied.”

He chose men of ability from the whole community of Israel. He made them leaders of the people. They became officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.

Let wise people listen and add to what they have learned. Let those who understand what is right get guidance.

The eye can’t say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” The head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you!”

At that time I spoke to you. I said, “You are too heavy a load for me to carry alone.
