His father-in-law saw everything Moses was doing for the people. So he said, “Aren’t you trying to do too much for the people? You are the only judge. And all these people are standing around you from morning until evening.”

He would get up early. He would stand by the side of the road that led to the city gate. Sometimes a person would come with a case for the king to decide. Then Absalom would call out to him, “What town are you from?” He would answer, “I’m from one of the tribes of Israel.”

The next day Moses took his seat to serve the people as their judge. They stood around him from morning until evening.

Moses answered, “The people come to me to find out what God wants them to do.

They judged the people at all times. They brought the hard cases to Moses. But they decided the easy ones themselves.

They kept him under guard. It wasn’t clear what should be done to him.

Moses’ father-in-law was a Kenite. His family went up from Jericho. Jericho was also known as the City of Palm Trees. His family went up with the people of Judah to the Desert of Judah. They went there to live among its people. Those people were living in the Negev Desert near Arad.
