“That same night I will pass through Egypt. I will strike down all those born first among the people and animals. And I will judge all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord.

The Philistines had left statues of their gods there. So David gave orders to burn them up.

He killed the oldest son of each family in Egypt. He struck down the oldest males that were born to people and animals.

God takes his place at the head of a large gathering of leaders. He announces his decisions among them.

“I said, ‘You leaders are like gods. You are all children of the Most High God.’

A thousand may fall dead at your side. Ten thousand may fall near your right hand. But no harm will come to you.

The Lord is the great God. He is the greatest King. He rules over all the gods.

The Lord will go through the land to strike down the Egyptians. He’ll see the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe. He will pass over that house. He won’t let the destroying angel enter your homes to strike you down.

Now I know that the Lord is greater than all other gods. See what he did to those who looked down on Israel.”

Then his master must take him to the judges. His master must take him to the door or doorpost of his master’s house. His master must poke a hole through his servant’s earlobe into the door or doorpost. Then he will become his servant for life.

“Do not speak evil things against God. Do not curse the ruler of your people.

God continued, “I am the Lord.

So the next day the Lord sent it. All the livestock of the Egyptians died. But not one animal that belonged to the Israelites died.

Here is a prophecy against Egypt that the Lord gave me. The Lord is coming to Egypt. He’s riding on a cloud that moves very fast. The statues of the gods in Egypt tremble with fear because of him. The hearts of the people there melt with fear.

He will set the temples of the gods of Egypt on fire. He will burn down their temples. He will take away the statues of their gods. Nebuchadnezzar will be like a shepherd who picks his coat clean of lice. Nebuchadnezzar will pick Egypt clean and then depart.

At Heliopolis in Egypt he will smash the sacred pillars to pieces. And he will burn down the temples of the gods of Egypt.” ’ ”

The Lord who rules over all is the God of Israel. He says, “I am about to punish Amon, the god of Thebes. I will also punish Pharaoh. I will punish Egypt and its gods and kings. And I will punish those who depend on Pharaoh.

But I will spare a few of them. I will save them from war, hunger and plague. In those countries they will admit they have done all kinds of evil things. I hate those things. They will know that I am the Lord.”

Workers will cry in all the vineyards. That’s because I will punish you,” says the Lord.

The Lord who rules over all will terrify Moab and Ammon. He will destroy all the gods on earth. Then distant nations will bow down to him. All of them will serve him in their own lands.

The Egyptians were burying all their oldest sons. The Lord had struck them down. He had done it when he punished their gods.

The people of Ashdod got up early the next day. They saw the statue of Dagon. There it was, lying on the ground! It had fallen on its face in front of the ark of the Lord. So they picked up the statue of Dagon. They put it back in its place.

Make models of the rats and the growths that are destroying the country. Give honor to Israel’s god. Then perhaps his power will no longer be against you, your gods and your land.
