A foolish person’s laughter is like the crackling of thorns burning under a pot. That doesn’t have any meaning either.

They attacked me like swarms of bees. But they were burned up as quickly as thorns in a fire. By the Lord’s power I destroyed them.

Evil people will be swept away before burning thorns can heat a pot. And it doesn’t matter if the thorns are green or dry.

Suppose a wise person goes to court with a foolish person. Then the foolish person gets mad and pokes fun, and there is no peace.

“Laughter doesn’t make any sense,” I said. “And what can pleasure do for me?”

I will turn your holy feasts into times for mourning. I will turn all your songs into weeping. You will have to wear the clothing of sadness. You will shave your heads. I will make you mourn as if your only son had died. The end of that time will be like a bitter day.”

“But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember what happened in your lifetime. You received your good things. Lazarus received bad things. Now he is comforted here, and you are in terrible pain.

How terrible for you who are well fed now! You will go hungry. How terrible for you who laugh now! You will cry and be sad.
