I will give it to you. I will give you a wise and understanding heart. So here is what will be true of you. There has never been anyone like you. And there never will be.

I’ve seen what is done on this earth. All of it is meaningless. It’s like chasing the wind.

I said to myself, “Look, I’ve now grown wiser than anyone who ruled over Jerusalem in the past. I have a lot of wisdom and knowledge.”

A lot of human wisdom leads to a lot of sorrow. More knowledge only brings more sadness.

“Meaningless! Everything is meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Everything is completely meaningless! Nothing has any meaning.”

Like a foolish person, a wise person won’t be remembered very long. The days have already come when both of them have been forgotten. Like a person who is foolish, a wise person must die too!

The more words people use, the less meaning there is. And that doesn’t help anyone.

What advantage do wise people have over those who are foolish? What do poor people gain by knowing how to act toward others?
