They were stubborn and tested God. They ordered him to give them the food they wanted.

So they argued with Moses. They said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses replied, “Why are you arguing with me? Why are you testing the Lord?”

Moses called the place Massah and Meribah. That’s because the people of Israel argued with him there. They also tested the Lord. They asked, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

Those were the waters of Meribah. That’s where the Israelites argued with the Lord. And that’s where he was proven to be holy among them.

Jesus answered him, “It is also written, ‘Do not test the Lord your God.’ ” (Deuteronomy 6:16)

We should not test the Messiah, as some of them did. They were killed by snakes.
