Jehoram received a letter from Elijah the prophet. In it, Elijah said, “The Lord is the God of your father David. The Lord says, ‘You have not followed the ways of your own father Jehoshaphat or of Asa, the king of Judah.

Your grand show of power has been brought down to the grave. The noise of your harps has come down here along with your power. Maggots are spread out under you. Worms cover you.

So horrible trouble will come on you. You will not know how to use your evil magic to make it go away. Great trouble will fall on you. No amount of money can keep it away. Something terrible will happen to you all at once. You will not see it coming ahead of time.

All the nations will serve him and his son and grandson. After that, I will judge his land. Then many nations and great kings will make him serve them.

So he sent the hand that wrote on the wall.

“And here is what these words mean. “The word Mene means that God has limited the time of your rule. He has brought it to an end.

Those you owe money to will suddenly rise up. They will wake up and make you tremble with fear. Then they will take away everything you have.

He has done mighty things with his powerful arm. He has scattered those who are proud in their deepest thoughts.

“But God said to him, ‘You foolish man! Tonight I will take your life away from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’

He will hand both Israel and you over to the Philistines. Tomorrow you and your sons will be down here with me. The Lord will also hand Israel’s army over to the Philistines.”
