Godly Jews buried Stephen. They mourned deeply for him.

She died at Kiriath Arba. Kiriath Arba is also called Hebron. It’s in the land of Canaan. Sarah’s death made Abraham very sad. He went to the place where her body was lying. There he wept over her.

Chariots and horsemen also went up with him. It was a very large group.

David spoke to Joab and all the people with him. He said, “Tear your clothes. Put on the rough clothing people wear when they’re sad. Mourn when you walk in front of Abner’s body.” King David himself walked behind it.

Hezekiah joined the members of his family who had already died. He was buried on the hill where the tombs of David’s family are. The whole nation of Judah honored him when he died. So did the people of Jerusalem. Hezekiah’s son Manasseh became the next king after him.

Jeremiah wrote songs of sadness about Josiah. To this day all the male and female singers remember Josiah by singing those songs. That became a practice in Israel. The songs are written down in the Book of the Songs of Sadness.

Don’t weep over dead King Josiah. Don’t be sad because he’s gone. Instead, weep bitterly over King Jehoahaz. He was forced to leave his country. He will never return. He’ll never see his own land again.

So the Lord speaks about King Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah. He says, “His people will not mourn for him. They will not say, ‘My poor brother! My poor sister!’ They will not mourn for him. They will not say, ‘My poor master! How sad that his glory is gone!’

The whole community found out that Aaron had died. So all the Israelites mourned for him for 30 days.

John’s disciples heard about this. So they came and took his body. Then they placed it in a tomb.

In Jerusalem there was a man named Simeon. He was a good and godly man. He was waiting for God’s promise to Israel to come true. The Holy Spirit was with him.

Cornelius and all his family were faithful and worshiped God. He gave freely to people who were in need. He prayed to God regularly.

Godly Jews from every country in the world were staying in Jerusalem.

And Saul had agreed with the Sanhedrin that Stephen should die. On that day the church in Jerusalem began to be attacked and treated badly. All except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria.

But Saul began to destroy the church. He went from house to house. He dragged away men and women and put them in prison.

The Israelites mourned over Moses on the plains of Moab for 30 days. They did it until their time for weeping and crying was over.

Samuel had died. The whole nation of Israel was filled with sorrow because he was dead. They had buried him in his own town of Ramah. Saul had thrown out of the land people who get messages from those who have died. He had also thrown out people who talk to the spirits of the dead.
