Stephen was full of God’s grace and power. He did great wonders and signs among the people.

Jesus told him, “You people will never believe unless you see signs and wonders.”

But he was too wise for them. That’s because the Holy Spirit gave Stephen wisdom whenever he spoke.

All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked right at Stephen. They saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

Brothers and sisters, choose seven of your men. They must be known as men who are wise and full of the Holy Spirit. We will turn this important work over to them.

This plan pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen. He was full of faith and of the Holy Spirit. Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon and Parmenas were chosen too. The group also chose Nicolas from Antioch. He had accepted the Jewish faith.

But he was full of the Holy Spirit. He looked up to heaven and saw God’s glory. He saw Jesus standing at God’s right hand.

The crowds listened to Philip and saw the signs he did. All of them paid close attention to what he said.

So Christ himself gave the gift of the apostles to the church. He gave the prophets and those who preach the good news. And he also gave the pastors and teachers as a gift to the church.

Those who have served well earn the full respect of others. They also become more sure of their faith in Christ Jesus.
