At one time my heart was sad and my spirit was bitter.

The sayings of those who are wise move people to take action. Their collected sayings are like nails pounded in firm and deep. These sayings are given to us by one shepherd.

The guard answers, “Morning is coming, but the night will return. If you want to ask again, come back and ask.”

All those who escape and are left alive will run to the mountains. They will sound like doves of the valley when they cry over their sins.

“I will pour out a spirit of grace and prayer on David’s family line. I will also send it on those who live in Jerusalem. They will look to me. I am the one they have pierced. They will mourn over me as someone mourns over an only child who has died. They will be full of sorrow over me. Their sorrow will be just like someone’s sorrow over an oldest son.

“Then what should we do?” the crowd asked.

Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”

Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?” John replied, “Don’t force people to give you money. Don’t bring false charges against people. Be happy with your pay.”

Those who heard what he had said began to go away. They left one at a time, the older ones first. Soon only Jesus was left. The woman was still standing there.

Peter said, “Brothers and sisters, a long time ago the Holy Spirit spoke through David. He spoke about Judas Iscariot. What the Scripture said would happen had to come true. Judas was the guide for the men who arrested Jesus.

“ ‘What should I do, Lord?’ I asked. “ ‘Get up,’ the Lord said. ‘Go into Damascus. There you will be told everything you have been given to do.’

When the leaders heard this, they became very angry. They wanted to put the apostles to death.

When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they became very angry. They were so angry they ground their teeth at Stephen.

Before I knew about the law, I was alive. But then the commandment came. Sin came to life, and I died.
