But no one says, ‘Where is the God who made me? He gives us songs even during the night.

Lord, during the night I remember who you are. That’s why I keep your law.

At midnight I get up to give you thanks because your decisions are very fair.

My God, I cry out in the daytime. But you don’t answer. I cry out at night. But you don’t let me sleep.

I will thank the Lord at all times. My lips will always praise him.

During the day the Lord sends his love to me. During the night I sing about him. I say a prayer to the God who gives me life.

Call out to me when trouble comes. I will save you. And you will honor me.”

To many people I am an example of how much you care. You are my strong place of safety.

When I was in trouble, I looked to the Lord for help. During the night I lifted up my hands in prayer. But I refused to be comforted.

I remembered how I used to sing praise to you in the night. I thought about it, and here is what I asked myself.

He will call out to me, and I will answer him. I will be with him in times of trouble. I will save him and honor him.

You will sing as you do on the night you celebrate a holy feast. Your hearts will be filled with joy. You will be as joyful as people playing their flutes as they go up to the mountain of the Lord. He is the Rock of Israel.

“ ‘High Priest Joshua, pay attention! I want you other priests who are sitting with Joshua to listen also. All you men are signs of things to come. I am going to bring to you my servant the Branch.

Because he was very sad and troubled, he prayed even harder. His sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.

Then the apostles, the elders and the whole church decided what to do. They would choose some of their own men who were leaders among the believers. They would send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. So they chose Judas Barsabbas and Silas. They were leaders among the believers.

Her owners realized that their hope of making money was gone. So they grabbed Paul and Silas. They dragged them into the market place to face the authorities.

At that hour of the night, the jailer took Paul and Silas and washed their wounds. Right away he and everyone who lived with him were baptized.

The apostles were full of joy as they left the Sanhedrin. They considered it an honor to suffer shame for the name of Jesus.

When you hope, be joyful. When you suffer, be patient. When you pray, be faithful.

And that’s not all. We are full of joy even when we suffer. We know that our suffering gives us the strength to go on.

We are sad, but we are always full of joy. We are poor, but we make many people rich. We have nothing, but we own everything.

Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord.

But my life might even be poured out like a drink offering on your sacrifices. I’m talking about the way you serve because you believe. Even so, I am glad. I am joyful with all of you.

I am happy because of what I am suffering for you. My suffering joins with and continues the sufferings of Christ. I suffer for his body, which is the church.

Jesus prayed while he lived on earth. He made his appeal with sincere cries and tears. He prayed to the God who could save him from death. God answered Jesus because he truly honored God.

My brothers and sisters, you will face all kinds of trouble. When you do, think of it as pure joy.

Is anyone among you in trouble? Then that person should pray. Is anyone among you happy? Then that person should sing songs of praise.

Suppose people say bad things about you because you believe in Christ. Then you are blessed, because God’s Spirit rests on you. He is the Spirit of glory.
