The crowd saw what Paul had done. They shouted in the Lycaonian language. “The gods have come down to us in human form!” they exclaimed.

I am not sending you to people who speak another language that is hard to learn. Instead, I am sending you to the people of Israel.

Then they shouted, “This is the voice of a god. It’s not the voice of a man.”

They called Barnabas Zeus. Paul was the main speaker. So they called him Hermes.

But Paul and Barnabas found out about the plan. They escaped to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding area.

The people expected him to swell up. They thought he would suddenly fall dead. They waited for a long time. But they didn’t see anything unusual happen to him. So they changed their minds. They said he was a god.

And all the people listened to him, from the least important of them to the most important. They exclaimed, “It is right to call this man the Great Power of God!”
