So let seven of the males in his family line be given to us. We’ll kill them. We’ll put their dead bodies out in the open in the sight of the Lord. We’ll do it at Gibeah of Saul. Saul was the Lord’s chosen king.” So King David said, “I’ll give seven males to you.”

Samuel spoke to all the people. He said, “Look at the man the Lord has chosen! There isn’t anyone like him among all the people.” Then the people shouted, “May the king live a long time!”

Saul also went to his home in Gibeah. Some brave men whose hearts God had touched went with Saul.

The messengers came to Gibeah of Saul. They reported to the people the terms Nahash had required. Then all the people wept out loud.

Now make a promise in the name of the Lord. Promise me that you won’t kill the children of my family. Also promise me that you won’t wipe out my name from my family line.”

So David made that promise to Saul. Then Saul returned home. But David and his men went up to his usual place of safety.
