Abner, the son of Ner, was commander of Saul’s army. Abner had brought Saul’s son Ish-Bosheth to Mahanaim.

Jacob saw them. He said, “This is the army of God!” So he named that place Mahanaim.

Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau. Esau lived in the land of Seir. It was also called the country of Edom.

He called out to the army and to Abner, the son of Ner. He said, “Abner! Aren’t you going to answer me?” Abner replied, “Who is calling out to the king?”
