While Absalom was offering sacrifices, he sent for Ahithophel. Ahithophel was David’s adviser. He came to Absalom from Giloh, his hometown. The number of people who followed Absalom kept growing. So he became more and more able to carry out his plans against David.

After all, who else should I serve? Shouldn’t I serve the king’s son? I will serve you, just as I served your father.”

Ahithophel answered, “Your father left some concubines behind to take care of the palace. Go and sleep with them. Then all the Israelites will hear about it. They will hear that you have made your father hate you. Everyone with you will be encouraged to give you more support.”

The kings of the earth rise up against the Lord. The rulers of the earth join together against his anointed king.

Come. We must deal with them carefully. If we don’t, there will be even more of them. Then if war breaks out, they’ll join our enemies. They’ll fight against us and leave the country.”

No wisdom, wise saying or plan can succeed against the Lord.

How terrible it will be for people who try hard to hide their plans from the Lord! They do their work in darkness. They think, “Who sees us? Who will know?”

Make your battle plans! But you won’t succeed. Give your orders! But they won’t be carried out. That’s because God is with us.

It was early in the morning. All the chief priests and the elders of the people planned how to put Jesus to death.
