“Now look at us. We are slaves today. We’re slaves in the land you gave our people of long ago. You gave it to them so they could eat its fruit and the other good things it produces.

Their enemies treated them badly and kept them under their power.

Lord, you are our God. Other masters besides you have ruled over us. But your name is the only one we honor.

Correct me, Lord, but please be fair. Don’t correct me when you are angry. If you do, nothing will be left of me.

They have sold themselves to the nations to get their help. But now I will gather them together. They will get weaker and weaker. The mighty kings of Assyria will crush them.

The Lord left some nations in the land. He left them to test the Israelites who hadn’t lived through any of the wars in Canaan.

He wanted to teach the men in Israel who had never been in battle before. He wanted them to learn how to fight.
